The developers want to give players maximum variety and tools to fight enemies.

Recently, the creators of Gothic 1 Remake presented a new diary dedicated to the work on the combat system. The developers said that they first took simple sword fighting animations and tried to build a system around directions and the ability to fully control them.

After several months of working with the prototype, they realized that “the controls are complex, animations, camera, and everything else must be perfectly synchronized.” Then the developers decided that if they recorded their own movements and made cameras for them, “something cool would come out.”

The remake's combat does not strictly follow the original; the authors of Gothic 1 Remake decided to divide weapons into three types — the player will have to consider the type of weapon used, some models will be perfectly suited for fighting a specific enemy:

In the original Gothic, there are two types of weapons: one-handed and two-handed. There is a certain progression, but all weapons of the same type always behave the same way. We want to divide them into three groups: axes, swords, and maces. Now, when a player finds a new weapon, they don't just look at the amount of damage. More importantly: does it suit my playstyle? Or is this the weapon I can use to defeat this enemy? You will keep many different weapons and use them in different situations. The idea is to give the player maximum variety and tools to fight enemies.

In the first “Gothic,” enemies have different fighting styles and approaches to combat, and the remake's authors “also strive for this.” For example, mole rats attack straightforwardly, wolves are smarter and try to surround the hero, and lizards immediately rush to bite. Each creature has its own set of movements and positioning. The developers noted that they added special attacks for some creatures “where it is appropriate.”

When working on artificial intelligence, they aimed to create AI that feels like a real creature or a real person.

Gothic 1 Remake is scheduled for release on June 5, 2026. You can add the game to your Steam wishlist via the following link, pre-orders are already open.
