"Serious Disruptions in the Supply Chain of Components for Megayachts": Tim Sweeney Mocks Gabe Newell Over Steam Deck Price Hike
The price increase of the Steam Deck has caused dissatisfaction among some of the audience.
Tim Sweeney once again reminded of his difficult relationship with Valve. The head of Epic Games publicly mocked Gabe Newell shortly after the company announced a price increase for the Steam Deck, which raised the cost of the flagship OLED model to $949.
Sweeney ironically stated that users are reacting too harshly to the device's price increase, and then shifted the conversation to one of Newell's hobbies — luxury yachts:
"Everyone is too harsh. The cost of components, which are ultimately paid for by Steam users' expenses, has significantly increased, and economic trends have caused serious disruptions in the supply chain of components for megayachts."
Tensions between the companies have lasted since 2018, when Sweeney, in a leaked court correspondence, called Valve's management "assholes" over the 30% commission on Steam. Since then, the Epic Games Store has unsuccessfully tried to emerge from the shadow of Newell's platform. At the same time, Epic itself recently laid off more than 1000 employees and raised prices for V-bucks in Fortnite.
