According to statements by Resident Evil Requiem producer Masato Kumazawa, one of the future locations for the series could be Japan – a country that has never before served as the primary setting for mainline Resident Evil installments.

Kumazawa-san admitted that the idea of moving the franchise's events to the developers' homeland has long been discussed within the team.

I think a Japanese setting is something every Japanese Resident Evil fan has thought about. I myself have thought about it many times. Since the main development team is in Japan, I'm sure every employee has considered such a possibility at least once. Japan has not yet appeared as a setting in the series, but it could very well happen someday.

A Japanese scenario would allow developers to bring back the underutilized organization Umbrella Japan Co., Ltd. into the plot. After the destruction of Raccoon City, Umbrella's Japanese division effectively ceased to exist, but Capcom could certainly find a way to link it again to the events of future games. It's possible that the company's abandoned facilities have been secretly used by someone all this time.
