The Witcher 3 features an improved Roach - modder refined the gameplay mechanics of Geralt's mount
One fan was very tired of the game's limitations.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt fan known as SethLeCornu believes that the standard version of Roach is "impractical." The limitations set by CD Projekt RED prevent him from immersing himself in the game: "playing the role of a witcher who travels on horseback is not enjoyable."
SethLeCornu proposed a solution — a modification that improves the gameplay elements related to Roach. The project is built around three "modules" that are intended to be used together, but each of them works independently.
A new approach to horse spawning — Geralt will summon Roach:
- Roach will magically appear next to the hero.
- Geralt automatically mounts Roach after she appears.
- Roach disappears after dismounting if Geralt is too far away, enters combat, or if the panic meter is full.
The player will be able to perform more actions while mounted on Roach:
How can riding be enjoyable if the player has to dismount every time to interact with the world? With this module, you can now talk to NPCs, interact with notice boards, read notices, use fast travel signs, and collect loot from chests and herbs while remaining in the saddle.
New Roach controls:
Switching speed will be more convenient, holding the button will activate a gallop. Roach will behave much like during races:
She stops less often without reason (though she still slows down before serious obstacles like cliffs, mountains, and water), road following is disabled (no more situations where Roach goes left when you want to go right), and galloping always consumes stamina.
The "Elden Roach" modification by SethLeCornu is distributed for free via Nexus Mods.
Currently, CD Projekt RED, in collaboration with Fool’s Theory studio, is developing a new large-scale expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt called Songs of the Past. Details are expected to be revealed this summer, and its release is anticipated next year.
