In the UK, PlayStation 5 sales sharply declined in May 2026 – according to journalist Christopher Dring, the drop was 50% compared to the previous month. Moreover, the gap between Sony's console and the Xbox Series X|S line was minimal: the PS5 managed to outperform its competitor by only 400 units sold.
One possible reason for this decline is the recent price increase for PS5, PS5 Pro, and the PlayStation Portal handheld device, which Sony announced earlier. Before this, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 regularly swapped places at the top of monthly sales charts, but in May, Nintendo's new console confidently held the lead.
At the same time, Xbox Series X/S showed positive dynamics. Sales of Microsoft's platform grew by 12%, which, as noted, was facilitated by the release of the exclusive game Forza Horizon 6.
As of March, gaming hardware sales in the US increased by 69% year-on-year, with Switch 2 taking first place, followed by PlayStation 5. Experts note that the success of each platform largely depends on the current game lineup and exclusive releases.
