Rockstar regretted adding stealth to GTA: San Andreas - developer talks about game creation

The development of stealth elements created an additional burden on the team.

Obbe Vermeij, former technical director at Rockstar North, continues to reveal some details about the production of the Grand Theft Auto series. Recently, a community member asked him on social media about stealth in GTA IV:

Were systemic stealth mechanics planned for GTA IV? The cut M9 Beretta pistol with a silencer found in a leaked build, and two missions in the game with scripted stealth, lead me to believe that stealth was at least considered at some point during development.

Obbe shared memories of working on GTA: San Andreas. Back then, Rockstar Games regretted deciding to add stealth to the game:

I'm not sure about those two missions. As I recall, stealth was one of those things we later regretted adding to San Andreas — we ended up spreading our resources too thin.

Obbe Vermeij said that "that's why he thought stealth was abandoned in GTA IV." However, he admitted that stealth mechanics might have been considered at a certain stage:

Although, looking at it from another perspective — there were constant experiments that I simply might not have known about.
