Huge Robot, Solitude, and Open World: First Details of Gen Atlas from the Creator of Shadow of the Colossus

One of the most notable announcements at Summer Game Fest 2026 was Gen Atlas, a new game by Fumito Ueda, the creator of ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian. Along with the official title, the developers for the first time showed gameplay and the world of the project.

Previously, the game was known under the working title Project: Robot. The trailer showed the main character traveling on the head of a giant robot, resembling a flying ship. The action will unfold on an abandoned planet with a large open world and a full day-night cycle.

The main surprise was the combat system. In one of the episodes, the hero uses firearms and fights from a third-person perspective. This is Fumito Ueda's first game with full-fledged shooting mechanics.

The giant robot companion will also play an important role. It will not only be a means of transportation but will also help open new routes, destroy obstacles, and reach previously inaccessible places.

Players have already noticed similarities with Shadow of the Colossus due to the huge structures, sense of solitude, and vast spaces. However, the sci-fi setting and post-apocalyptic atmosphere make Gen Atlas a completely new project in the Japanese developer's work.

The authors confirmed that the game will be a single-player open-world action game on Unreal Engine. Epic Games is the publisher. The project will be released on PC (exclusively on Epic Games Store), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
