Project Mara officially canceled: Ninja Theory shut down ambitious horror game

Xbox, according to new data, has canceled another major game. Ninja Theory studio has completed work on an experimental horror game codenamed Project Mara.

Studio head Dom Matthews announced in an official statement that the project has been closed. According to him, the decision was difficult but necessary from a business perspective.

The cancellation of Project Mara coincided with the announcement of the new Senua game (effectively Hellblade 3) at the Xbox Showcase. Matthews noted that abandoning the horror game allowed the team of 85 developers to unite and focus their efforts on the studio's next project.

Project Mara was first shown in 2020 in a short video. The developers planned to create the most realistic psychological horror based on real research and experience.

Later it became clear that the project actually remained in an early conceptual stage and did not go into full production. According to the studio, the cancellation will not affect its financial or structural condition.
