Xbox is betting on exclusives again, but not abandoning multiplatform strategy
Xbox is not abandoning its multiplatform strategy, but the company confirmed that there will be more exclusive games in the future. This was stated by the head of Xbox, commenting on Microsoft's plans after the Xbox Games Showcase.
The presentation showcased the first projects created exclusively for Xbox Series X|S and PC — among them Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution. This signaled a possible return to a more active exclusive policy.
At the same time, Microsoft does not plan to stop releasing games on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2. The company continues to develop its publishing business and actively releases projects on competing platforms. Asha Sharma noted:
We are the second largest publisher in the world, and when you reach that position, you want your games to be available everywhere. You are stronger when the whole world plays with you. At the same time, we are increasingly becoming a platform, and it is difficult to find platforms without their own exclusives and content.
According to her, Xbox's strategy will change gradually. Currently, the company is focusing on a limited number of key exclusives and evaluating their effectiveness.
This is kind of a journey for us. Our business is not in the best shape right now, as you may have noticed, so we're starting with one or two key exclusives. If things improve, we'll try to add more.
Microsoft is trying to find a balance between multiplatform releases and a return to exclusives. Games for competing platforms will remain, but some Xbox Game Studios projects will once again be available only on the company's devices.
