The main problem for most Russian game studios remains finding funding. According to the "Igroprom" ecosystem study, over 70% of developers consider the lack of investment to be the key obstacle to business growth.
There is very little money in the market, and the situation with attracting funding is critical. Also, investors lack experts in the video game market who can evaluate projects. There is also no practice of issuing loans against IP, although the need has long been overdue.
Financial difficulties are compounded by problems in promoting projects. Almost 78% of surveyed studios reported the need for marketing support, as well as assistance with entering both the Russian and foreign markets.
Industry representatives note that potential investors often poorly understand the specifics of the gaming business and the associated risks. In addition, there are practically no mechanisms for lending against intellectual property in Russia, which limits the ability of studios to attract funds for the development of new projects.
The industry also draws attention to the difference in the volume of state support for various segments of the entertainment industry. According to market participants, from 2020 to 2026, video game projects received about 6–7 billion rubles through the Internet Development Institute programs, while over 60 billion rubles were allocated for the production of films and TV series.
Despite the existing difficulties, the video game market in Russia continues to grow. According to the Agency for Strategic Initiatives, its volume reached 208 billion rubles in 2025. By the end of the decade, the figure could increase to 271 billion rubles, which indicates the continued potential of the industry and the growing demand for gaming content.
