In an interview with GamesRadar, Pocketpair's Head of Communications and Publishing, John Buckley, stated that the studio does not use generative AI in game development for a fairly simple reason: players themselves don't want it.
Players don't want it. And if players don't want it, then I think that's where the conversation ends.
At the same time, the Pocketpair representative acknowledged that other companies might hold a different view. However, in his opinion, the current hype around generative AI might prove unsustainable in the long run.
Buckley believes that some large studios might indeed turn to such technologies to save time, but he doubts they will become a truly dominant tool in the industry. He also noted that even Steam is already showing some caution regarding AI-generated content.
According to Buckley, there's no reason for Pocketpair to replace artists with algorithms. The company employs its own team of specialists who prefer to create content themselves.
Buckley also admitted to being skeptical of games that use AI-generated assets. In his opinion, even industry professionals often question whether developers truly needed to resort to such tools if the rest of the project was executed well using traditional methods.
He separately commented on the idea of marketing games as "entirely human-made". While Buckley admits that such statements might appear in the future, the prospect itself seems rather bleak to him.
