Generative AI is not yet capable of creating large games independently, according to CD Projekt Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski. In a new interview for the EDGE Magazine Knowledge newsletter, the top manager once again expressed skepticism about the idea of fully automated project development using artificial intelligence.
Nowakowski spoke about a conversation with the head of an unnamed game studio that actively uses AI in its production processes. According to his interlocutor, thanks to generative tools, the team can create dozens of prototypes in just one or two weeks, quickly select the best ideas, and release a finished game to the market within a few weeks.
However, the head of CD Projekt doubts that such an approach will be the right direction for the industry. Although he admits that such experiments may prove successful, he still has questions about the long-term effectiveness of this development model.
Nowakowski's stance on AI has remained unchanged for several years. As early as late 2025, during a discussion of the company's financial results, he stated that CD Projekt does not plan to expand its staff to implement generative AI in game development. In his opinion, the increased availability of personnel in the industry is more related to mass layoffs and project closures in various studios than to the development of artificial intelligence.
At the same time, the company already uses AI tools in areas related to increasing productivity. Nowakowski emphasized that such solutions indeed bring significant benefits, helping to automate individual workflows. Nevertheless, he does not believe that modern technologies can replace the creative component of development.
According to him, artificial intelligence can be a useful assistant, but it cannot independently create a large project like The Witcher. Nowakowski is confident that AI will not develop either the hypothetical The Witcher 5 or subsequent installments of the series without human involvement.
