Sony bets on expensive PS Plus tiers - Extra and Premium are growing
Sony is revising its PlayStation Plus strategy. The company is not focusing on increasing the number of users of the basic Essential tier and has concentrated on promoting the more expensive Extra and Premium tiers.
The goal is to increase subscriber engagement, improve the content catalog, and convince more users to upgrade to higher tiers. According to company data, in fiscal year 2024, 38% of subscribers used Extra or Premium. For comparison, in 2022, this figure was 30%.
Sony reported that PlayStation Plus helped the gaming division achieve record profitability. At the same time, subscriber churn was the lowest in the last 5 years, despite price increases in 2023.
Some of the audience remains dissatisfied. The company faces criticism due to the subscription price increase, questions about the value of the catalog, and the shift from large monthly updates to weekly content additions. Some players believe that this makes each update less significant.
Unlike Xbox Game Pass, Sony does not plan to add its biggest games to the subscription on release day. The company aims to make Extra and Premium the most attractive options in the PlayStation Plus lineup.
