"More Than a Backstory": Owlcat Reveals Origins in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn

Origins will unlock certain content and allow a different perspective on characters.

Owlcat Games studio has published a new development diary for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, dedicated to the character's "origin".

In this sci-fi action-RPG, players will be able to choose one of three origins when creating a character — Earther, Martian, or Belter. Each option will provide unique bonuses to exploration skills, starting equipment, and a special armor appearance.

In addition, the choice will affect the appearance of the player's character and their twin. Earlier, the developers said that Jay would wear similar armor, but "modify it a bit".

The protagonist's past in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn will gradually be revealed through dialogues with their twin Jay, as well as other characters. According to the developers, at such moments the player will be able to reflect on what led them to where they are now, and how this might affect the present and future. Sometimes characters will recall the protagonist's past decisions and "react to them accordingly". Owlcat Games believes that this creates truly interesting opportunities for role-playing and self-expression, without slowing down the overall pace of the game.

Origin will also allow unlocking certain content. For example, if the protagonist is a Belter who grew up on Ceres, the player will discover that they have a "loyal and responsive friend" there who can help with finding people and information. However, if an Earther arrives on Ceres, this character will be unknown to them, and a different side of her can be seen. But Earthers have contacts on the Moon, and Martians will be the only ones allowed to land on the red planet at the beginning of the game.
