Ahead of a new wave of layoffs in the Xbox gaming division, former company employees have issued a warning: according to them, the management of some studios may use layoffs to settle scores with employees who previously complained about toxic behavior from superiors.

Game Developer spoke with four former Xbox employees who independently described a similar situation. According to them, after conflicts with managers, complaints to Microsoft's HR department, or attempts to draw attention to inappropriate behavior by superiors, they soon lost their jobs, were laid off, or were forced to leave voluntarily.

One such employee was former Halo Studios art director Glenn Israel, who previously publicly accused studio management of harassment and retaliation against employees. In an interview with journalists, he advised current Xbox employees to save all documentation related to complaints and interactions with management in advance, and to notify HR that a possible dismissal could be considered an act of retaliation.

Israel also recommended researching deadlines for filing complaints with regulatory bodies and consulting with lawyers before signing any documents after dismissal.

His opinion is shared by labor law specialist Thomas Lenz, who previously worked as a lawyer for the US National Labor Relations Board. According to the expert, it is important for employees to keep not only evidence of possible violations by management, but also confirmation of their own achievements and professional results. Such materials can be useful both when looking for a new job and in case of litigation.

Lenz noted that when conducting layoffs, companies are obliged to use transparent and objective criteria for selecting employees. Otherwise, there is a risk of accusations of discrimination or illegal retaliatory actions.

Former Xbox employees claim that in practice, the situation was different. One source said that he was part of a mass layoff after testifying in an investigation against a studio manager who regularly humiliated subordinates in meetings. According to the interlocutor, this manager subsequently participated in forming the layoff lists.

Another former employee stated that after a conflict with his boss, he was placed in a performance improvement program, lost access to internal Microsoft systems, and was faced with a choice: accept the terms of the program or leave the company. Attempts to report verbal abuse by the manager to HR, it is alleged, did not yield results.

A third source said that he observed cases of pressure on employees who complained about working conditions or requested special working conditions due to health reasons. According to him, any disagreement with management could lead to negative career consequences.

Israel himself stated that for nine months he simultaneously held three leadership positions on different projects and even received a special award from Xbox for his contribution to the studio's work. Nevertheless, at the end of 2025, he was fired under the pretext that the art director position was no longer needed. Just a month after his departure, another employee was promoted to the same position.

The former executive claims that the dismissal occurred after his complaints about the actions of Halo Studios head Pierre Hintze and art director Chris Matthews. According to Israel, he personally encountered or witnessed various violations, including employee harassment, favoritism, and attempts to force undesirable employees out of the company.

Based on his own experience and conversations with about a dozen former Xbox employees, he concluded that layoffs can be used as a tool to get rid of people who have officially complained about management. In his opinion, such actions are disguised as ordinary business decisions.
