Rumor: PS6 Risks Launching Over $1000 Due to Memory Costs
The reason for this concern stems from Microsoft's comments in a statement regarding price increases for the Xbox Series X|S. The company noted: "console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5 times, and we expect another doubling by autumn 2027."
Amid rising component costs, other devices are already becoming more expensive — Apple has raised prices on some MacBooks and iPads, and Valve released a Steam Machine with a base price of around $1000 without a controller included.
This creates serious risks for the PS6, which Sony was rumored to be planning to release in late 2027 in a relatively budget-friendly version. However, rising memory prices could derail these plans.
Sony might try to offset the situation by selling software and PlayStation Plus subscriptions, as well as reducing PlayStation 5 shipments during the holiday season to maintain profitability.
The console market already looks unstable, and an entry cost of $1000+ for the new generation could seriously impact demand.
