Digital Foundry believes GTA VI will not run at 60 FPS due to console hardware limitations
Recently, Rockstar Games opened pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI and showcased various screenshots. Players were impressed by the graphics, and discussions began online about how many FPS PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 Pro consoles would be able to achieve in such a demanding game.
Digital Foundry specialists also joined the discussion, sharing their perspective. They reminded that consoles have limitations due to the "hardware" (processor) used, so they doubt that GTA VI will have a 60 frames mode:
The PS5 Pro is the most powerful console of the current generation, so it's logical to expect that it is the most likely to offer a refresh rate mode above 30 FPS. However, it's worth remembering that its CPU performance increase is only marginal compared to the base PS5, and the main advantage is related to a more powerful GPU, improved ray tracing acceleration, and PSSR upscaling support. None of these features significantly reduce the load on the processor, so it is much more likely that GTA 6 will be released on PS5 Pro with 30 FPS or 40 FPS modes, rather than 60 FPS.
According to Digital Foundry, a 40 FPS mode would be a good option if 60 frames are unattainable, since "in terms of frame time, it's 25 ms — exactly in the middle between 30 FPS (33.3 ms) and 60 FPS (16.7 ms)".
Digital Foundry notes that for now, these are just their assumptions and they could be wrong:
[If we are wrong], then this would be the first Rockstar open-world game initially targeting 60 FPS on consoles — and it seems that this would already be visible from the trailers shown. Moreover, it would mean that the entire game and its simulation system were designed from the outset with 60 FPS in mind. This seems unlikely, but we would be happy to be wrong.
Earlier, Digital Foundry specialists expressed doubt that the Grand Theft Auto VI screenshots published online were taken from console versions. They allow that Rockstar Games might have used special software to prepare the necessary frames.
