Capcom and Blizzard Partners Criticize Sony's Decision to Abandon Disc Games
The rental service GameFly stated that it deeply regrets Sony's decision to abandon disc games. Company representatives emphasized that they have always believed in the value of physical media, which has been the foundation of their business philosophy since its inception.
The company iam8bit, which releases collector's editions of games and collaborates with Capcom, Blizzard, and Xbox, also criticized the move. According to them, physical releases remain an important part of preserving gaming heritage, guarantee true ownership of purchased games, and give buyers freedom of choice.
Independent studio Aeternum Game promised to do everything possible to release as many of its games on physical media as possible before the new rules come into effect.
Analysts note that Sony's decision aligns with a multi-year decline in sales of boxed editions.
