"PS5 will be my last console." Gamers massively criticized Sony's decision
A Digital Foundry poll of 45,000 viewers showed that 86% of respondents consider physical game releases important and urge Sony to reconsider its decision to abandon discs.
Following Sony's announcement to cease physical game releases for PlayStation starting January 2028, Digital Foundry conducted a poll among its audience. Over 45,000 people participated, and 86% of respondents stated that physical editions are still important and the company should reconsider its decision.
Journalist John Linneman also urged Sony to abandon its plans, expressing hope that "the public reaction will be strong enough." According to him, the closure of the PS Vita and PS3 stores showed that digital purchases are essentially rentals, and platform owners can at any moment deprive users of access to content. He also recalled a situation where Sony revoked access to hundreds of previously purchased movies and TV series without compensation.
In the comments, many PlayStation owners stated that they would refuse to buy Sony's next console. Among the most popular messages were: "PS5 will be my last console" and "PS5 will be my last Sony console."
Gamers also recalled a 2013 PlayStation commercial in which Sony mocked Xbox One's game resale restrictions. The most popular comment under the video reads: "You became the villain you mocked."
