French Presidential Candidate Criticizes Sony and GTA VI

French presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon stated that he intends to "fight for gamers" and begin work in 2027 to protect consumer rights in the video game industry.

The reason was the situation surrounding GTA VI. The game will be released without a disc in the box. Also, Sony decided to stop releasing games on physical media starting in January 2028. The discussion quickly moved beyond the gaming industry.

The politician stated:

Given that GTA VI will be sold without a disc, and Sony has announced the cessation of physical game sales from 2028, we must ask ourselves how we treat such products. In the future, you will pay for something you will never own. Without the ability to lend, resell, or guarantee the preservation of what you paid for. Video games are not an ordinary commodity; they are a cultural good, and current law must protect them. In 2027, we will begin work on this issue. Gamers also have rights.

This is one of the first such high-profile political statements related to Sony's decisions and the distribution model of GTA VI. Until recently, the topic was mainly discussed in gaming media and among gamers. Now it has reached the level of public policy.

It is difficult to say yet whether Mélenchon's statement will be a real initiative or an attempt to attract the attention of gamers. However, the issue of digital distribution and game ownership has already gone beyond the gaming industry.
