After a weak start with $37 million in its opening weekend, "Supergirl" continues to rapidly lose audience. According to preliminary estimates, the film will only gross about $10 million in the US during its second weekend, which means a 73% drop in demand. Such a result looks particularly alarming against the backdrop of the long Independence Day holiday weekend, which traditionally helps the box office of major releases.
On Thursday, the film earned only $2.2 million, while during the holiday weekend, audiences prefer "Minions and Monsters" and "Toy Story 5." Against this background, analysts expect that next week some cinemas will reduce the number of "Supergirl" screenings or remove the film from the schedule altogether.
To date, the film's box office stands at about $48 million in North America and approximately $86 million worldwide. At the same time, the film's production budget, according to various estimates, ranges from $170 to $186 million, excluding marketing costs.
Just a few days ago, some analysts assumed that global box office could approach the $200 million mark, but now even such a scenario seems unlikely. If the decline continues, "Supergirl" risks joining the list of major box office disappointments among modern comic book adaptations, alongside "The Flash" and "Captain Marvel 2."
