Sony managed to break GTA VI's record - PlayStation's disc abandonment announcement proved far more popular than Rockstar's announcement

In early July, Sony published a blog post dedicated to discontinuing game disc releases for PlayStation:

As consumer preferences and the entertainment industry as a whole continue to shift from physical media to digital, the production of physical game discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will cease from January 2028. After this date, new games will only be available digitally on the PlayStation Store and from retailers. This transition does not affect games that have already been released or will be released on discs before January 2028.

The company also posted a link to this blog on the PlayStation account on the social network X (formerly Twitter). The post went viral and garnered over 136 million views in a few days.

This allowed Sony to break GTA VI's record — Rockstar Games' June post announcing pre-orders only had 83 million views.

Some users are now trying to protest and are canceling their PlayStation Plus subscriptions. There is an opinion that this way they can reach Sony's management and show that there is a demand for physical versions of games.
