End of an Era: Sony to Stop Releasing Its Games on Discs
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that starting January 2028, it will cease the production of physical versions of all new games for PlayStation consoles. This means that all projects released after this date will be distributed exclusively in digital format through the PlayStation Store, as well as in the form of digital codes from retailers.
The company explained the decision by changing user preferences and general trends in the entertainment industry. According to Sony, most players already prefer digital game purchases today, and the demand for physical media continues to decline.
At the same time, Sony emphasized that this change will not affect already released games and projects that will be released before January 2028. Such titles will still be available on physical discs.
The company believes that the transition to a digital model is a natural stage in the development of the PlayStation ecosystem. Abandoning the production of new discs will allow for more efficient resource allocation and focus on developing game distribution methods.
Despite the cessation of physical editions, Sony assured that players will still be able to purchase new games both directly from the PlayStation Store and from retail partners offering digital versions. The company also noted that it remains committed to developing its gaming service and intends to continue providing users with the best gaming experience.
