The gaming industry continues to be hit by a wave of mass layoffs. This time, reports concern the legendary studio id Software, which, according to available data, has cut approximately 50% of its staff.
The scale of the layoffs was revealed by former senior game systems programmer Michael Maynard, who worked at the studio for 21 years. On his LinkedIn page, he confirmed that he was among the laid-off employees.
Yes, I was part of the team (roughly 50% of the company) that was laid off today. I've been here for over 20 years — from RAGE to DOOM: The Dark Ages. It's sad, but after more than 40 years in the video game industry, it wasn't a big surprise to me. The saddest thing is to see id Software, a pioneer and innovator of the FPS genre, turn into another object of asset "reorganization."
According to 3D Realms founder Scott Miller, almost all programmers were fired from id Software.
If the information from Miller is accurate, then the future of id Tech engines remains in question.
