It seems Nintendo has not abandoned the idea of adding Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support for the Nintendo Switch 2 in docked mode. This is hinted at by a recently discovered job opening at the company, although there is no official confirmation of this feature yet.
As noted by Nintendo Patents Watch, Nintendo is looking for a Senior Display Engineer who will be responsible for the architecture and development of the display software stack for current and future devices, ensuring compliance with modern display standards, and researching and implementing new technologies for gaming consoles.
Of particular interest is one of the desirable requirements for the candidate – knowledge of display technologies, including HDR and VRR. Although the job description does not directly mention working on the Nintendo Switch 2, this may indicate that the company continues to develop support for variable refresh rates.
Currently, VRR on the Nintendo Switch 2 only works in handheld mode, despite Nintendo stating before the console's release that the technology would also be supported when connected to a TV. Later, mentions of this feature for docked mode disappeared from official materials, and the company admitted that the information was published in error.
According to Nintendo Patents Watch, the new job opening does not confirm that VRR support for docked mode is under development, but it appears to be indirect evidence of such plans. Since the console's display already supports this technology, the search for a specialist with experience in VRR may indicate preparation for new features related to image display.
