Australian players who want to play Grand Theft Auto 6 will have to go through an age verification process. This requirement is due to new online safety laws that will come into force in the country in 2026.
According to news.com.au, GTA VI, which is expected to receive an R18+ age rating, falls under legislation requiring services and platforms to verify that only adult users can access such content.
It remains unclear whether mandatory verification will apply to the entire game or only to the online mode, GTA VI Online, which is expected to launch after the main version's release.
Under Australian rules, responsibility for compliance lies with the developer. If Rockstar Games fails to comply with the new regulations, the company could face civil penalties of up to AUD 49.5 million for each violation.
