Despite the successful launch of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, Ubisoft carried out massive layoffs at Ubisoft Barcelona. 51 employees were left without work, many of whom were directly involved in the game's development.
The upcoming layoffs were announced on June 10. Employees believe that the decision was made in advance and did not depend on the commercial results of the project. Sources claim that even high interest in the game and successful pre-orders could not change management's plans.
As former employees note, at Ubisoft, new projects are usually distributed among teams long before the completion of current development — sometimes almost a year in advance. However, the Barcelona team expressed concern in the summer of 2025 that they had not yet been assigned the next project. These fears were eventually confirmed: shortly after the completion of work on Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, the division responsible for the Assassin's Creed series was disbanded, and 51 people were laid off.
One employee, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that the layoffs are part of a broader problem within the company.
These layoffs are happening against a backdrop of ongoing workplace issues. This is not an isolated incident, but a reflection of persistent poor treatment of employees, loss of talent, forced resignations due to weakened employee rights, and an increasingly centralized management system where employees have virtually no say in decisions affecting their work.
According to sources, Ubisoft also canceled the traditional game release event. Instead of a full celebration, employees were offered only a small catered meeting right in the office.
