Former lead writer for the Dragon Age series, David Gaider, believes that the franchise has practically no future within Electronic Arts. He shared this in a new interview, where he also reminisced about working on the series and his vision for its possible revival.
According to the writer, even during his time there, the project was constantly under threat of cancellation. He noted that Electronic Arts management did not expect such successful sales of the series' games, and each new release was a pleasant surprise for the publisher.
While I was there, we were always literally one step away from the project being shelved. But each new game sold much better than Electronic Arts expected, and that constantly surprised them.
Despite this, today he is skeptical about Dragon Age's prospects within EA and does not believe that the publisher will actively continue to develop the franchise.
At the same time, Gaider admitted that he would gladly return to working on the series if he had the opportunity. In his opinion, Dragon Age needs to return to its roots and make the world darker, more dangerous, and emotionally heavier.
The writer noted that if he were to return, he would focus on the elements that once made Dragon Age popular among fans. He also added that he would like to create stories capable of evoking strong emotions and even controversial reactions from the audience.
Gaider worked on several Dragon Age games and was the lead writer for Dragon Age: Inquisition. He left BioWare in 2014, and the latest installment of the franchise to date is Dragon Age: The Veilguard, released in 2024.
