Nintendo may release a version of the Nintendo Switch 2 with an OLED display, but a final decision on this project has not yet been made. This is reported by ZDNet Korea, citing industry sources.
According to the publication, the company is currently only considering the possibility of creating an updated console model. If the project gets the green light, full-scale development will begin later this year. In this case, the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 OLED could happen no earlier than 2028.
For comparison, the original Nintendo Switch was released in March 2017, and the Nintendo Switch OLED model appeared only four years later – in October 2021. If the rumor is confirmed, the updated version of the Switch 2 will reach the market faster than it did with the first generation of the console.
The main obstacle to launching a new model, sources say, is the cost of OLED panels. It is reported that Nintendo is already negotiating with suppliers, including Samsung Display, but the price difference between OLED screens and the currently used LCD panels remains a key factor in the decision-making process.
One industry representative stated that Nintendo is considering using a rigid OLED panel for the Switch 2, but the device's release has not yet been approved precisely because of the higher cost of the displays. Another source noted that Samsung Display is interested in supplying screens for the potential new product, but the final price of the console after switching to OLED remains unknown.
It should be noted that the current Nintendo Switch 2 is equipped with an LCD display. Although many users consider this a step backward compared to the Switch OLED screen in terms of color reproduction and contrast, the panel used supports variable refresh rate (VRR), which provides smoother game display with unstable frame rates.
