Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom will differ from previous versions of the character.
The Russo brothers talked about their version of Doctor Doom in the movie "Avengers: Doctor Doom". The directors retained the key features of the villain from Marvel comics, but supplemented them with an original story created specifically for the cinematic universe.
"We never adapt comics directly. We always add new experiences that didn't exist before and show what else these characters can be."
According to the directors, in the case of Doctor Doom, they managed to preserve the most important features of the character and at the same time create a new version of the hero for the "Avengers" story.
"Doom turned out to be in the golden mean: he very accurately conveys all the most impressive things that were in the comics, but at the same time received a completely new story created for this film."
The Russo brothers' statement does not yet answer the main question surrounding Robert Downey Jr.'s casting. Marvel does not disclose why Doctor Doom looks like the deceased Tony Stark and whether there is a plot connection between the characters.
Previous leaks hinted that Doom will spend most of the film in a mask, and the moment his face is revealed to the Avengers, who knew the real Tony Stark, could become one of the plot revelations. Whether this information will be confirmed, viewers will probably only find out after the film's release.
Anthony Russo himself urged fans to wait for the premiere, noting that all answers will become clear in the context of the story:
"Listen, everything will become clear when you watch the movies. I think that's what we like about such stories – they develop sequentially. This is a huge experiment. No one has ever done anything like this before. Marvel is unique."
"Avengers: Doctor Doom" will be released on December 18, 2026. The sequel, "Avengers: Secret Wars", will be released on December 17, 2027.
