Shawn Layden urged Xbox leadership to get their act together and more actively develop their platform.

Former Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shawn Layden believes that the gaming industry needs a strong Xbox, as competition between Microsoft and Sony stimulates innovation and benefits players.

In an interview with Kotaku, Layden commented on Xbox's current situation, which is going through a difficult period. In recent months, Microsoft has carried out massive layoffs affecting over 3,000 employees, and console sales remain below expectations. Furthermore, the strategy of developing Game Pass and releasing games on other platforms has not yet led to significant business growth.

According to Layden, the industry only benefits when both platforms are forced to constantly improve.

Both platforms pushed each other to be better. The desire to innovate and the drive to differentiate become much less apparent when there is one dominant player in the market. Yes, I would like to see Xbox regain its former shape.

The former PlayStation head noted that the rivalry between Xbox and PlayStation has always been one of the main drivers of the gaming industry's development. In his opinion, if one company begins to unconditionally dominate the market, it could lead to a slowdown in innovation and a weakening of creative competition.

Layden also expressed hope that Xbox can regain the position the brand held during the Xbox 360 era. He believes that strong competition makes the industry more interesting for both developers and players.
