Short and Bloody: Zach Cregger's New "Resident Evil" Will Be 95 Minutes Long

News 0

The runtime of the new Resident Evil adaptation by "The Re-Education of Molly Singer" director Zach Cregger will be 95 minutes. This duration appeared on the website of the American cinema chain AMC. In spring, a preliminary version of the film was shown to a limited audience, which, according to media reports, lasted about an hour and a half.

A difference of only five minutes does not mean that the film was reworked after test screenings. Journalists might have rounded up the initial runtime or watched an unfinished version without the final credits. In any case, everything indicates that the film's structure has remained largely unchanged.

This runtime fully aligns with Cregger's vision. The director described the film as one giant action scene that begins as early as the fifth minute and barely slows down until the very end. This way, he aims to translate the structure of Capcom's games to the screen, where the hero constantly moves between locations and faces new challenges.

The main character will be a courier named Brian, played by Austin Abrams. During a virus outbreak, he receives a mission to deliver a mysterious briefcase to a Raccoon City hospital, after which he finds himself in the midst of a zombie apocalypse.

"He's not a typical game character. He has no combat skills at all and is completely unprepared for survival. Brian is an ordinary person who is suddenly burdened with a 'sacred mission' that leads him straight to hell. It's like Frodo's journey to Mordor."

The film also stars Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser, and Jonno Wilson. The international premiere of the new "Resident Evil" is scheduled for September 18, 2026.
