The first season of "Stranger Things" was released on July 15, 2016. To celebrate the series' tenth anniversary, Netflix released a special version of the season, stylized as a recording on an old VHS tape, so viewers could "rewind the tape" and once again travel back to 1983, where the events of the first season unfold.
All eight original episodes were processed, adding scan lines, color distortions, flickering, and the characteristic loss of sharpness of old tapes. The frame was also cropped on the sides, bringing it closer to the 4:3 aspect ratio. Periodically, synchronization jumps and other defects appear on the screen, imitating a worn-out recording.
However, there are no new scenes or alternative editing in the special version — the changes only affected the image and presentation.
