Marvel needed "the greatest actor in the world" for the role of Victor von Doom.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige revealed how Robert Downey Jr. reacted to the offer to play Doctor Doom in the new "Avengers" movie. According to the producer, the actor agreed to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tony Stark's characteristic confidence:

"He literally replied: 'I played the best hero, so I can play the best villain too.'"
Kevin Feige

Feige also explained why Marvel needed Downey Jr. specifically for the role of Victor von Doom:

"He is a scientist, a technologist, a sorcerer, and a ruler. And to embody all the complexity, tragedy, and charisma of this character, you need the greatest actor in the world."

Downey Jr. will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time since "Avengers: Endgame." Marvel has not yet revealed why Doctor Doom looks like the deceased Tony Stark and whether there is a plot connection between the characters. Joe Russo also commented on the actor's return and assured that viewers will get answers after watching:

"There is no better actor in the world than Robert Downey. I won't reveal anything, but when you see the films, it will all make sense."
Joe Russo

The premiere of "Avengers: Doctor Doom" is scheduled for December 18, 2026.
