Marvel plans to continue the animated series “X-Men ’97” for many more years. Producer Larry Houston said that the fourth season has already been approved within the studio, and he himself would like to at least repeat the success of the original show, which ended after five seasons.
“If the show can at least replicate what I did with the original, five seasons would be great. Maybe even six. But it all depends on the audience and how well viewers receive the stories we tell.”
According to the producer, additional seasons will allow the team to address comic book storylines that appeared after the original animated series concluded. Over the past 24-25 years, Marvel has released many stories about mutants that Houston didn't have time to adapt in the 1990s.
However, the team's ambitions extend far beyond five or six seasons. Producer Eric Lewald said that the head of Marvel Animation, Brad Winderbaum, would like to bring the series to its tenth season:
“Brad wants to do ten seasons, and we want that too. We hope that in eight years we will still be discussing the tenth season. With 60 years of comics and so many characters, there’s practically no limit.”
Currently, the second season of “X-Men ’97” is airing on Disney+ — the sixth episode out of nine will premiere on July 22. The premiere of the third season is expected in 2027 as part of Marvel Television's strategy to release new seasons annually.
