Amazon MGM has officially launched the production of the "RoboCop" series for the Prime Video service, which has been in development for about three years.
Peter Ocko, who worked on the series "Lodge 49," "Pushing Daisies," and "The Office," will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Production will be handled by Blumhouse Atomic Monster with the participation of James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett.
Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, the creators of the original 1987 "RoboCop," have also joined the team. Both will serve as executive producers for the new series.
The first season will consist of eight episodes, and the story will return to the franchise's origins: a giant technology corporation convinces city authorities to introduce a new robot into the police force, into which the mind of the deceased officer Alex Murphy is implanted.
James Wan promised to preserve the ideas of Paul Verhoeven's film and reinterpret them in light of modern technological reality:
"What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time. Questions about technology, identity, and who corporations truly serve have only become more relevant. We want to preserve everything that made the original iconic, emphasize its significance for the modern technological world, and at the same time create something completely new."
The cast and premiere date for the new "RoboCop" have not yet been announced.
