League of Legends Legend Faker Becomes Honorary Police Officer in South Korea
Now the esports athlete will help young people fight online casino addiction.
Lee Sang-hyeok, better known to the world as Faker, has received an unusual appointment. The legendary esports athlete and six-time League of Legends world champion has become an honorary officer of the South Korean National Police Agency.
According to the Seoul Economic Daily, Faker's new role is not related to law enforcement in the traditional sense. The player will serve as an ambassador for a campaign to combat cyber-gambling among young people. As part of the program, he will participate in the creation of social videos, promotional posters, and other informational materials dedicated to the voluntary reporting system for online gambling cases among minors.
Faker himself stated that he perceives the new appointment as a great honor and a serious responsibility.
It is a great honor for me to become an honorary police officer and ambassador for this initiative. I feel a huge responsibility and intend to actively participate in the campaign, telling young people about the dangers of cyber-gambling and the voluntary help-seeking system.
Acting Commissioner General of the National Police Agency Yoo Jae-seong emphasized that early detection of gambling addiction allows for faster counseling and treatment. According to him, Faker's positive image will help young people not be afraid to seek help.
The voluntary reporting program for cyber-gambling cases started in May and will run until August 31. To date, authorities have registered 806 voluntary reports. Participants undergo counseling, assessment of the degree of gambling addiction, and, if necessary, are referred for treatment. The police also stated that they intend to mitigate punishment as much as possible for those who voluntarily reported their problem, taking into account the size of bets, remorse, and progress in treatment.
