Sony appears to be preparing to eliminate one of the most common problems with PlayStation controllers – analog stick drift. This is indicated by a recently published patent from Sony Interactive Entertainment, which describes a new magnetic stick technology for a future gamepad.
According to the document, instead of traditional potentiometers, the company proposes using contactless magnetic sensors. This refers to TMR (Tunnel Magnetoresistance) technology, which is already used in some third-party controllers. Unlike classic potentiometers, such sensors have no rubbing elements, so they are practically not subject to wear – which is most often the cause of drift.
In addition to increased durability, magnetic sensors provide higher accuracy in reading movements. It is also noted that TMR sensors consume less energy compared to Hall effect-based solutions, making them particularly suitable for wireless devices.
The Sony patent states that the new design will allow precise tracking of the stick's position even after prolonged use due to its contactless operating principle. In addition, the system limits the rotation of the mechanism so that the user's effort is fully transmitted to the stick's deflection, rather than being wasted on unnecessary movements, which should positively affect control.
The document also describes the use of a spring mechanism for stable return of the stick to the central position and additional stabilization elements that should improve accuracy and extend the controller's lifespan.
It is worth noting that this is just a patent, and not a confirmation that such technology will appear in a production PlayStation 6 controller.
