Warner Bros. has announced the digital release date for "Supergirl." As early as July 28, the film will be available for purchase and rental on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and other international platforms. Thus, the digital premiere will take place just 32 days after the film's theatrical release – such an early release is due to disappointing box office results.
To date, the film has grossed $70.68 million in North America and another $52.9 million in international markets. Total worldwide gross has reached $123.58 million.
Meanwhile, the production budget for the comic book movie is estimated at approximately $170 million, and Warner Bros. may have spent another $120 million on the marketing campaign. According to media estimates, the film needed to gross at least $300 million to break even, so the studio faces nine-figure losses.
Along with the digital release of "Supergirl," viewers will have access to over 90 minutes of bonus materials. These include behind-the-scenes footage of the film's creation, materials about the original comic, the development of practical effects and alien races, the staging of action scenes, music, and the character Lobo. The bonus materials will also include deleted scenes and an animated short film featuring Krypto.
Physical editions of the film on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD will go on sale on September 8. The release date for "Supergirl" in the HBO Max catalog has not yet been announced.
