LG Electronics has faced a wave of criticism after a Gamers Nexus investigation alleged that some of the manufacturer's monitors automatically install proprietary software on computers via Windows Update without explicit user notification.
The reason for the investigation was numerous complaints from owners of the LG UltraGear 34GX900A-B monitor, which costs about $1200. As Gamers Nexus journalists found out, after connecting the device to a PC, the system automatically downloads the LG Monitor App Installer application through the Windows update mechanism.
According to the investigation, the user is not informed about the start of the installation, and the application itself, after installation, gains access to system resources and an internet connection. In addition, the program offers to install a free 30-day trial version of McAfee antivirus.
Journalists also drew attention to the user agreement associated with LG software. It contains a clause stating that the device owner must notify family members and guests about the possibility of recording in accordance with applicable privacy and wiretapping laws. It was this fragment that caused a particularly heated discussion online and led to accusations of "eavesdropping" on users, although no direct evidence of recorded conversations was presented.
At the same time, according to Gamers Nexus, similar behavior was observed not only with the new UltraGear 34GX900A-B, but also with some older LG monitor models.
Amidst the resonance, LG issued an official statement. The company emphasized that McAfee is not installed automatically and can only be installed after explicit user consent. According to LG, the LG Monitor App Installer application is distributed through the official Windows mechanism, and the offer to install McAfee is just an additional option.
Microsoft Executive Vice President Pavan Davuluri also commented on the situation. He reported that Microsoft contacted LG, after which the manufacturer agreed to promptly disable the pop-up window offering to install McAfee in its application.
Despite the measures taken, users continue to criticize both companies. Many believe that the automatic installation of software via Windows Update without clear notification undermines trust in the Windows ecosystem, and the official statements from LG and Microsoft do not contain direct apologies for the situation.
