The revenue distribution system in the gaming industry does not satisfy the experienced specialist.

Former Rockstar Games employee Rob Carr, who worked on Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption, shared his memories of working and criticized the modern compensation model in the gaming industry in an interview.

According to the developer, the creators of hits often get nothing from it – even if they worked on the project for many years with constant overtime. As an example, he cited himself: he worked on Grand Theft Auto V for an average of 80 hours a week; overtime was not an exception, but the norm. At the same time, Rob Carr "did not receive any share of the profits."

Rob Carr noted that even a very small share would have been enough for him:

If I had received just 0.01% of GTA V's profits, I would be a millionaire. Even if 0.001% – that would have made me a millionaire. However, I received nothing at all.

In his opinion, the lack of a fair profit distribution mechanism is one of the main reasons for the current crisis in the gaming industry. Currently, most of the profits are taken by executives and partners, while developers do not receive their percentage. Carr believes that a share of the profits could motivate employees and help retain experienced developers.
