In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" showrunner Ira Parker spoke about the difficulties the team faced during the production of the second season.
The new episodes adapt George R. R. Martin's second novella about Dunk and Egg — "The Sworn Sword." The story takes place during a prolonged drought, so the creators sought hot and dry locations for filming. Production was eventually moved from Northern Ireland to Spain, with the Canary Islands chosen as the location. However, instead of the expected heat, the team encountered a rare storm:
"The place we chose to shoot the drought was hit by a once-in-a-century storm. The rain didn't stop, our locations were flooded, and authorities declared a state of emergency. We had to suspend work. Then we were about to return – and it all happened again."
Due to constant disruptions, the team struggled to get into a stable work rhythm for a long time. The production of six episodes stretched out longer than the authors anticipated, and at the time of the interview, the film crew still had about three weeks left on set.
The first season was also a tough challenge for the team due to a tight schedule and constant relocation between sites. Parker compared its production to working on an independent or even student film, but the sequel brought even more difficulties:
"The first season was incredibly difficult. We had to shoot and move between sets at tremendous speed. Then the second season started, which somehow turned out to be ten times harder. It was a brutal, brutal season. The second season turned out to be [a real monster]."
The experience of Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell helped overcome some of the difficulties. Over the past year, the actors playing Dunk and Egg became more comfortable with their characters, allowing the film crew to avoid some of the problems of the first season.
Despite the delays, the second season of "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" is still planned for release in the first half of 2027. It will consist of six episodes, each lasting approximately 35 minutes.
