HBO unveiled a new trailer for the "Lanterns" series during a presentation at Comic-Con in San Diego. In addition to previously shown footage, the video finally featured more action scenes with the heroes, including Hal Jordan's first full flight in his Green Lantern suit.
The plot follows rookie John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and veteran Corpsman Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler). The heroes investigate a mysterious murder in rural America and gradually uncover a threat whose consequences could affect the entire new DC cinematic universe.
The series' action unfolds across two timelines. In 2016, Hal has been training John to use the ring for two months, but still doesn't allow his student to fully wield its power. The events of the second timeline take place in 2026, but the creators have not yet revealed details of this part of the story.
The cast also includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones. Nathan Fillion will once again be seen as Guy Gardner, and Sinestro is played by Ulrich Thomsen.
Chris Mundy serves as showrunner for "Lanterns." The pilot episode was written by Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and comic book writer Tom King, with the first two episodes directed by James Hawes.
The series premieres on August 16 on HBO and HBO Max. The first season will have eight episodes.
