Work on the car add-on helped improve truck models.

The creators of the truck driver simulators Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator have published a new dev diary dedicated to the creation of an improved material system. It was introduced as part of the major 1.60 update.

A pair of developers – Daniel and Martin – worked on the system, implementing (and continuing to implement) the system for trucks in ETS 2 and ATS, and also incorporating improvements into passenger cars from the upcoming Road Trip mode for American Truck Simulator.

SCS Software published several photos and screenshots in their blog, showing in-game models and an example of references for developers. The system was developed with trucks in mind from the start:

Development began while we were working on the Road Trip project. Car interiors are smaller and darker than truck interiors, so the shortcomings of the original system were more noticeable in them. Besides direct lighting, the original system had no way to correctly display light inside the cabin. In the real world, a significant part of visual perception is formed by what is called indirect, or reflected light. However, the game did not work with this concept at all and was not designed for it. We understood that this needed to be changed somehow.

The release date for the Road Trip mode with regular cars for American Truck Simulator has not yet been announced. You can add the Ford Car Pack and RAM & Dodge Car Pack add-ons to your Steam wishlist here and here.
