During "The Walking Dead: Dead City" panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie, unexpectedly announced that Beth Greene would return in the third season – Emily Kinney will reprise her role in a special episode set in an alternate reality.
Entertainment Weekly also published the first shots and video from the set, showing Beth reuniting with Maggie. The actresses filmed near the Bethesda Fountain in New York's Central Park, with Kinney's character carrying a guitar case, reminiscent of her passion for music.
"We're so excited that Emily wanted to come back and do this with us."
For Kinney herself, the offer to play Beth again came as a surprise:
"I had no idea I'd ever get to revisit Beth. I'm so happy to be back here."
Beth died in the fifth season of the original "The Walking Dead," released in 2014. During a hostage exchange, the character was shot by Dawn Lerner, after which Daryl carried her body out of the hospital in front of Maggie.
The creators have not yet revealed the nature of the alternate reality, so it is unknown whether this episode will be a full-fledged spin-off of the universe or if the events shown will turn out to be a dream or a fantasy of one of the characters.
The third season of "Dead City" premieres on July 27 on AMC and AMC+. In Russia, the series will be available on "Amediateka." In the new episodes, Maggie and Negan will try to leave their long-standing feud in the past and build a prosperous settlement in Manhattan.
