Box office projections for "Spider-Man: A New Day" continue to climb rapidly just days before its premiere. According to EmpireCity Box Office analyst, the film could now gross over $330 million in its opening weekend in the US and Canada, with the upper estimate reaching $345 million.
Even with around $330 million, "A New Day" would mark the second-largest opening in North American box office history. Only "Avengers: Endgame," which earned $357.1 million in its debut weekend, would remain higher. If the film reaches the upper estimate, it would be only about $12 million short of the absolute record.
The film will also comfortably set a new record for Sony Pictures. Currently, the top spot among the studio's releases is held by "Spider-Man: No Way Home," which opened in North America with $260.1 million. Thus, "A New Day" could surpass the previous installment by $70-85 million.
Final projections may still change after the first reviews are published tomorrow. Positive reviews could give the film an additional boost, although surpassing "Endgame"'s result will still be extremely difficult – an additional obstacle will be the absence of premium IMAX theaters, which are occupied by Christopher Nolan's "Odyssey."
Updated global opening projections are not yet available. Previously, the film was predicted to gross around $550 million in its debut weekend, with expected North American revenues of $228 million. If international market figures have not changed, a simple recalculation suggests a global opening of approximately $650 million, but analysts have not yet published such an estimate.
The global premiere of "Spider-Man: A New Day" is scheduled for July 31. The film is expected in Russian cinemas from August 20.
