PlayStation faces a week-long boycott over Sony's disc abandonment - gamers prepare for a massive August protest
Dissatisfied gamers want to convince Sony to return to disc production.
In July, Sony announced its decision to stop releasing game discs for PlayStation. This decision did not please many gamers.
Some have already tried to pressure the company by canceling PS Plus subscriptions, and now members of the PlayStation community have announced a large-scale campaign "#PSBlackout" – participants plan to refrain from purchases, console use, and related services for a week next month:
Sony wants to abandon its fans? Let's give them a taste of their own medicine. Together with other content creators, we are announcing a week-long #PSBlackout boycott in August. No logins, no gaming sessions, no purchases on any Sony platforms.
According to the creators of the "#PSBlackout" initiative, Sony Interactive Entertainment has been increasingly distancing itself from its audience for several years – closing player-favorite studios like Bluepoint; making "dubious bets" on games-as-a-service; effectively abandoning the PS VR2 direction and no longer understanding which franchise returns fans are waiting for:
In this regard, we urge PlayStation players to participate in an economic and gaming boycott from Sunday, August 23, 7:00 PM local time, to Sunday, August 30, 7:00 PM local time. You can participate by simply turning off your console or logging out of your account for seven days. We believe that such a period will have minimal impact on publishers and developers, but will allow players to express their position.
