After 15 years, the fan remake of Portal is ready, but the release was thwarted by Valve - the copyright holder remains silent
At the final stage, the modders encountered communication difficulties.
Recently, players once again remembered Portal: Alive & Kicking. The development history of this ambitious fan project began back in 2011, and now it's ready for release, but a big problem has arisen.
According to the modders, they are currently awaiting Valve's approval for the publication of Portal: Alive & Kicking, but the company remains silent. Dot Operator explained that the authors used source code previously provided by Valve itself — now they need to settle a legal issue:
We signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), but initially did not sign a non-commercial release form. We have now signed it, but have not yet received a response from them [Valve].
According to developer Dot Operator, this license is necessary because they modified the Portal 2 source code, so they currently have no legal ability to release the mod even outside of Steam without Valve's approval.
The Portal: Alive & Kicking team tried to contact Valve through standard Steam support channels, but has not yet received a response: "Steamworks support requests are handled through the same system as Steam purchases. If they don't respond there, then as far as I know, there's nowhere else I can send requests."
Modders continue to wait for a response, and players are worried about the fate of the long-awaited fan project.
