A new horror game with a built-in virus has been released on Steam - a hacker stole the game and is infecting players' PCs

Those who tried the free new game fell into a hacker's trap.

Many projects are released on Steam every day, some of them are distributed for free. In July, Deadwood House was released, and some players raised the alarm – they claim that the developer "DeadWood" stole someone else's game and is now spreading viruses through it.

The author of the YouTube channel Eric Parker drew attention to this project and decided to conduct an investigation: he downloaded it, played it, and then began to analyze his system for the presence of malicious viruses and hidden changes.

The first tests revealed nothing, so Eric Parker suggested that RCE (Remote Code Execution) might be used here – a vulnerability that allows an attacker to run malicious code on someone else's computer or server. Elements that could be used by hackers for an attack were indeed found in the code.

Eric Parker continued to research the code and found the real creator of this game, "Konstantin Kang" – in fact, it is called Daylight Dead, not "Deadwood House". The blogger expressed the opinion that Steam's verification "has become softer", as developers can simply steal an open-source project and release it in the store as their own.

The example of Deadwood House shows that you should not rush to download fresh free games from unverified developers.
