Infinity Ward: Rivalry with Treyarch is a thing of the past, but the spirit of competition remains
Historically, Infinity Ward and Treyarch shaped two different directions for Call of Duty's development.
Infinity Ward studio head Mark Grigsby spoke about how the relationship between the two leading studios responsible for the Call of Duty series – Infinity Ward and Treyarch – is structured today. According to him, the fierce rivalry between the teams has gradually given way to close cooperation, although healthy competition still persists.
In a new interview dedicated to the development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Grigsby noted that developers regularly exchange ideas and coordinate their work to avoid duplicating key gameplay mechanics and innovations. This has become especially relevant after all major franchise studios transitioned to a unified technology stack and a common game engine.
We are constantly in touch. We share ideas so that we don't step on each other's toes and don't implement the same features before the other team. There used to be quite a serious rivalry between us, but now everything is much friendlier. A little competition still remains, and that's great.
